Involuntary Roaming: How Your Phone Bill Can Explode Without Ever Leaving Your Country ?

Two European telecom regulators sounded the same alarm this summer: roaming outside the EU can get expensive fast — sometimes even if you never really left home.

It's called “involuntary roaming.” In border regions (Romania-Serbia, Croatia-Bosnia and Herzegovina, Switzerland-Germany-France, and others), your phone automatically latches onto the strongest signal nearby — no permission asked. If that network sits outside the European Union (EU), the “Roam Like at Home” rules don't apply, and rates are no longer capped.

Romania's telecom regulator, ANCOM, lays out the real numbers: up to €2.62 per minute for calls, up to €4.76 per megabyte of data. Worse, some operators bill an entire data package the moment you use a single megabyte — even if you close the app two seconds later. Belgium's IBPT, meanwhile, is warning travelers about popular non-EU destinations: the UK, Andorra, Turkey.

“Roam Like at Home” has genuinely improved things — Ukraine and Moldova joined the zone on 1 January 2026 — but it still doesn't cover the UK, Switzerland, Turkey, Andorra, Serbia, or Albania. Destinations millions of Europeans visit every summer.

Both regulators agree on one thing: warning SMS messages and automatic spending caps exist, but they don't fully protect you. The responsibility still sits with you — turn off automatic roaming, watch your usage, know the exceptions. That's a lot to ask of someone on holiday.

A simpler fix: activate an eSIM before you leave

Instead of relying on your home carrier or digging through phone settings, activate a WonderSIM eSIM before departure. Your data then runs through a fixed, known-in-advance plan — not your home operator's pricing grid. No package silently switched on. No €4-per-megabyte surprise.

Some destinations start at €5. Not €5 a day — €5 for your entire trip, with no risk of a three-figure bill when you get home.

Bottom line

Whether you live near a border, are heading to Turkey, the UK, or Morocco, or you're simply the type who forgets to turn off roaming before boarding — the risk is real, and today's safety nets don't always hold. International connectivity should be simple and predictable by default. That's exactly what WonderSIM delivers.
